Theresa May has warned world leaders at the United Nations that they have a “duty” to stop the onward flow of migrants.

In a short speech in New York, the Prime Minister fiercely backed the right of other countries to control their borders, following an EU referendum 民投票权) campaign dominated by immigration.

Her words also go to the heart of tensions between EU countries, with southern European nations taking on unprecedented (空前的) numbers of migrants, while member states further north tighten Border controls.

She was addressing a special meeting as she claimed uncontrolled migration was exposing people to danger and reducing support for those fleeing war zones.

Mrs.May said, “We need to be clear that all countries have the right to control their borders and protect their citizens and be equally clear that countries have a duty to manage their borders to reduce onward flows of illegal and uncontrolled migration.”

8

(公

“We need to do more to help them do so.”

At her first UN General Assembly gathering, she then explained how she thought leaders could successfully tackle a migration crisis that has put massive stress on Europe and been blamed as a key factor in the Brexit (脱欧) vote.

She went on, “Of course controlled legal and safe migration benefits our economies, and there is nothing wrong with the desire to migrate for a better life.”

“But the uncontrolled migration we see today is not in the interests of migrants who are exposed to danger, not in the interest of the countries they are leaving, travelling through or seeking to reach, and not in the interest of refugees for whom resources and popular support are reduced.”

She said the first goal should be to ensure refugees claim shelter in the first safe country they reach, adding that the UN should “set this as a principle”.

Politicians in northern and western Europe have demanded adherence to the principle as large numbers of refugees and migrants from Syria and North Africa have landed in Italy and Greece with the goal of heading for countries like Germany, France and the UK.

Mrs.May said, “The current trend of onward movement benefits criminals gangs, endangers people and reduces the prospects of refugees ever returning home to rebuild their countries.”

“So we must do far more to support the first safe countries themselves, assisting the refugees and host communities — an approach that is starting to work in Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey.”

She then said, “Second, we need to better distinguish between refugees and economic migrants.Failing to do so only encourages more people to put their lives in the hands of criminal gangs.”

36.According to the passage, what is to blame for the Brexit vote? A.The ongoing migration crisis.

37.From the passage, we can infer that the attitude of Theresa May towards the onward flow of migrants can be described as ________.

A.completely opposed B.indifferent

C.absolutely supportive D.tolerant but conditional

Recently, I've found an increasing number of coffee shops don't offer WiFi.I know what they're trying to do.They want people to talk to each other without being consumed by technology. They would rather hear many voices having deep discussions than see a keyboard or eyes staring at a cell phone. However, their good intentions are often mistaken by consumers, me included.

One snowy day, a friend and I found ourselves working from home and decided it would be a great idea to go to a local coffee shop and work there. We found a place that had unique coffee flavors and great reviews. It was a bit of a walk from where our train dropped us off, but we decided it was worth it.We walked through the snow and my feet slowly worked their way toward being frostbitten

because the boots I had worn were not waterproof.Well, about 10 minutes later, we found the place under a brick building and our blue lips were eagerly looking forward to that warm drink. As we walked up to the door, we saw the sign, “No WiFi”.In anger, we looked at each other and said “Starbucks?”.

Of course, this was a loss for them. They lost our business, and they lost the chance to make their relationshipbuilding mission a reality.People who come to coffee shops to work do come to be on their computers. But they also go there so they can still have human communication. They want to work around other people, not in a room by themselves. What's more, even if the shops don't have WiFi, people will still use their phones, unless all the phone service is blocked out.

10

So, my friend and I spent the snowy day working together in the biggest coffee shop chain. We fulfilled our task perfectly and that wasn't the case in those coffee shops without WiFi.Therefore, there is no need for coffee shops to turn off WiFi.With it, the shops will get more people and there'll be more laughter and better relationships than before.

根据第一段中的“They want people to ... a keyboard or eyes staring at a cell phone.”

39.What does the author think of some coffee shops' providing no WiFi? A.Acceptable. C.Inadvisable.

B.Worthwhile. D.Pioneering.

最后一段中的“there is no need for coffee shops to turn off WiFi”亦是关键提示。

40.Which conclusion does the author seem to draw in the passage? A.Coffee shops should become more advanced. B.Nobody can stop the development of technology. C.Coffee shops always need to follow fashion too. D.Modern technology makes business more attractive.

根据最后一段的内容,尤其是“Therefore, there is no need for coffee shops to turn off WiFi.With it, the shops will get more people and there'll be more laughter and better relationships than before.”

As we all know, every sentence we speak reflects something about who we are as humans.Even people speaking the same language have distinct dialects (方言) that are rooted in their history and culture, so whether you say “soda” or “pop” may intimate what country and what region you are from. What you call the night before Halloween may be tied to your religious beliefs. What kind of slang you use may come from the habits of the community you grew up in.

Language also throws light on connections between us and our natural environment.Plants and animals that are given names in any language are generally those that are relevant to people who are speaking the language. The relevance comes from the way that the people have interacted with the animals and plants, in some cases over the centuries.

While we might think of language as having a fixed set of words and rules that we learn in school, in fact language is always evolving.New words begin to emerge while others fall out of use and pronunciation changes over time. There is no doubt that the meaning of words is also changing a great deal.People also borrow words from languages other than their own to expand their own lexicon (词汇).Our ability to learn language develops when we are young.Sounds heard as babies set the stage for language learning later.Baby cooing is the result of babies' analysis of the languages spoken to them.Babies are practicing the pronunciation and recognition of sounds that they need for communication.Children exposed to different languages early in life and growing up with various kinds of languages around them always develop better cognitive (认知的) functions, such as the ability to focus and ignore distractions.

Languages are as diverse as the communities that speak them and each of the about 7,000 world languages is a piece of evidence of a community's unique human experience.Yet, many languages all over the world are endangered. It is reported that as many as half of the world's languages could go silent by the end of this century. The reasons are that the speakers always receive social inequalities and disrespect from others. If the speakers themselves are treated unfairly and disrespected by others, what will happen to their surroundings, let alone their language?

41.What does the underlined word mean in the passage? A.Reveal.

B.Translate.

12

C.Influence. D.Misunderstand.

根据第一段中的“every sentence we speak reflects something about who we are as humans”可知,作者认为我们所说的语言反映了我们的自身信息,接着下文阐述了“What you call the night before Halloween may be tied to your religious beliefs. What kind of slang you use may come from the habits of the community you grew up in.”

42.What does the author seem to agree with? A.Babies tend to be sensitive to various sounds. B.Babies have a strong language analytical ability. C.Early exposure to various languages benefits children. D.Babies' cognitive ability is generally better than adults.

根据第三段的最后一句“Children exposed to different languages early in life ... such as the ability to focus and ignore distractions.”

43.Why will many languages in the world go silent in the author's opinion? A.They have lost their original fascination. B.Their pronunciations are usually hard to learn. C.The official languages are strongly advocated. D.The speakers' social positions change for the worse.

根据最后一段的最后两句“The reasons are that the speakers always receive social inequalities and disrespect from others ...let alone their language?”

44.What is the best title of this passage? A.Languages Have Different Functions B.Language Is Changing Constantly C.The Environment Shapes Us D.Our Language Is Ourselves

通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“As we all know, every sentence we speak reflects something about who we are as humans.”

D

After much thought, I came up with a brilliant plan.I worked out a way for Rich to meet my mother and win her over.In fact, I arranged it so my mother would want to cook a meal especially for him.

Rich was not only not Chinese and he was a few years younger than I was.And unfortunately, he looked much younger with his curly red hair, smooth pale skin, and the splash of orange freckles (雀斑) across his nose.He was a bit on the short side, compactly built. In his dark business suits, he looked nice but easily forgettable, which was why I didn't notice him the first year we worked together at the firm. But my mother noticed everything.

“So what do you think of Rich?” I finally asked, holding my breath. She tossed the eggplant in the hot oil, angry hissing sound.“So many spots on his face,” she said.

“They are freckles.Freckles are good luck.” I said a bit too heatedly in trying to raise my voice above the noise of the kitchen.

“Oh?” she said innocently. “Yes, the more spots the better.”

She considered this a moment and then smiled and spoke in Chinese: “When you were young, you got the chicken pox.So many spots, you had to stay home for ten days.So lucky, you thought.”

I couldn't save Rich in the kitchen. And I couldn't save him later at the dinner table.

When I offered Rich a fork, he insisted on using the slippery ivory chopsticks.Halfway between his plate and his open mouth, a large chunk of redcooked eggplant fell on his brand new white shirt.

And then he helped himself to big portions of the shrimp and snow peas, not realizing he should have taken only a polite spoonful.

He declined the new greens, the tender and expensive leaves of bean plants.He_thought_he_was_being_polite_by_refusing_seconds,_when_he_should_have_followed_my_father's_example,_who_made_a_big_show_of_taking_small_portions_of_seconds,_thirds_and_even_fourths,_always_saying_he_couldn't_resist_another_bite_and_then_groaning_he_was_so_full_he_thought_he_would_burst.

But the worst was when Rich criticized my mother's cooking and didn't even know

14

what he had done.As is the Chinese cook's custom, my mother always made modest remarks about her own cooking. That night she chose to direct it toward her famous steamed pork and preserved vegetable dish, which she always served with special pride.

“Ai! This dish not salty enough, no flavor,” she complained, after tasting a small bite.

This was our family's cue to eat more and proclaim it the best she had ever made. But before we could do so, Rich said, “You know, all it needs is a little soy sauce.” And he proceeded to pour a riverful of the salty black stuff on the china plate, right before my mother's horrified eyes.

And even though I was hoping throughout the dinner that my mother would somehow see Rich's kindness, his sense of humor and boyish charm.I knew he had failed miserably in her eyes.

Rich obviously had a different opinion on how the evening had gone. When we got home, I was still shuddering,_remembering how Rich had firmly shaken both my parents' hands with that same easy familiarity he used with nervous new clients.“Linda, Tim,” he said, “we'll see you again.” My parents' names are Lindo and Tin Jong, and nobody except a few older family friends ever calls them by their first names.

“What did she say when you told her?” I knew he was referring to our getting married.

“I never had a chance,” I said, which was true. How could I have told my mother I was getting married, when at every possible moment we were alone, she seemed to remark on how pale and ill he looked.

Rich was smiling.“How long does it take to say, ‘Mom, Dad, I am getting married?’”

“You don't understand.You don't understand my mother.”

45.Which is NOT the reason why the author didn't tell her mother she was getting married?

A.She didn't have a chance to tell her mother. B.Her mother disliked Rich's freckled face.

C.Mother was impressed by his boyish charm and humor. D.She was shocked by Rich's violation of cultural taboo.

文章倒数第六段提到“And even though I was hoping

15

throughout the dinner that my mother would somehow see Rich's kindness, his sense of humor and boyish charm.”

46.Which of the following is NOT closely related to cultural differences in the story?

A.“Ai! This dish not salty enough, no flavor,” she complained, after tasting a small bite.

B.Rich obviously had a different opinion on how the evening had gone. C.Halfway between his plate and his open mouth, a large chunk of redcooked eggplant fell on his brand new white shirt.

D.“Linda, Tim,” Rich said, “we'll see you again.”

47.What does the underlined part in the story really mean?

A.Father made a big show of his preference for the dish by helping himself to the dishes more times, which Rich didn't follow.

B.Rich behaved politely by not following Father who kept having more servings of greens.

C.Father had a good appetite for more portions of greens while Rich had good table manners of having one serving.

D.Rich didn't appear polite because he didn't follow Father, who made a big show of his great appetite by eating more until he couldn't eat.

48.What does the underlined word “shuddering” most probably mean? A.Hesitating. C.Shaking.

B.Regretting. D.Reflecting.

49.What can be the best title of the story? A.Rich Met My Mother B.East VS West

16

结合文章第一段第二句“I worked out a way for Rich to meet my mother and win her over.”

50.The author wrote this story in a(n) ________tone. A.poetic C.pessimistic

B.humorous D.objective

尤其是文章开头提到的“a brilliant plan”及“Freckles are good luck.”

Most of us know a cheetah (猎豹) can beat an elephant in a footrace. But scientists have struggled to find why certain animals move faster than others. Now it seems size might be the answer.

Animals' speed limits affect how they migrate, and how they interact with their environment — and whether they eat or are eaten.Speed is determined by how far an animal moves in a given amount of time. So, it is clear that animals with longer limbs or fins will travel further and reach higher speeds. But all the evidence says it isn't so: today's fastest animals aren't the elephants or blue whales, but the cheetahs and marlin. Some scientists have suggested this is because the bones and muscles of very large animals can't stand the force experienced during the rapid move.

But Myriam Hirt at the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research thinks there is something else going on.By examining data from 494 running, flying and swimming species, Hirt has created a model that seems to confirm that the fastest species are those with the body mass (体重) that falls in the middle of the range. For running and swimming animals that “middle” body mass is about 100 kilograms; for flying animals it is about 1 to 10 grams.

Her team suggests being “middlesized” is of great advantage because of basic physical considerations.Animals have a limited amount of time to get up to high speeds before they run out of the quickly available energy stored in muscle

17

tissue.Larger animals have more muscle tissue, and therefore more energy available for a race. But, due to their large body mass, they can't start moving as quickly as small animals and take a longer time to reach a given absolute speed.By the time they get up to higher speeds, they have little of this quickly available energy left. The model shows that maximum speed drops off steeply as animals grow beyond the middle size, and matches what we know about different species' speeds.

Hirt was surprised by the model's universal applicability.“It works for animals of different ecosystems, movement types and even for larger extinct species,” she says.“We can also make highly accurate predictions of maximum speeds of currently living species.” She also says the model can also allow us to predict extinct species' speeds. The running speeds of dinosaurs have been a controversial point of debate for some time.

But some scientists are skeptical of the model until more evidence is presented.Mauricio Fuentes is an independent researcher from Santiago, Chile, who focuses on the biomechanics of fast running speeds. He would like to see more evidence that the model applies to swimming and flying animals.“A good correlation (相互关系) does not necessarily mean the model is correct, but it certainly is a good signal,” says Fuentes.

Title: Why fast animals are never too small or big Animals' speed limits ·Their speeds influence how they migrate and whether they can (51) ________ in their environment. 18

·Animals with longer limbs or fins may not move the fastest for their bones and muscles are (52) ________ to stand the force. The result of the study It analyses data from about 500 species and confirms that (53) ________ animals run, swim or fly the fastest. ·Animals with middle body mass are (54) _______ The analysis Hirt's study of the study because it takes a (55) ______ time for them to get up to high speeds. ·Those largesized animals have little available (56) ______ left after they speed up. ·Maximum speed (57) __________ sharply as animals grow beyond the middle size. Different (58) ____ on the study 根据第二段的“Animals' speed limits affect how they migrate, and how they interact with their environment — and whether they eat or are eaten.”

根据第二段中的“today's fastest animals aren't the elephants or blue whales, but the cheetahs and marlin. Some scientists have suggested this is because the bones and muscles of very large animals can't stand the force experienced during the rapid move.”

根据第三段中的“Hirt has created a model that seems to confirm that the fastest species are those with the body mass (体重) that falls in the middle of the range.”以及第四段中的“Her team suggests being ‘middlesized’ is of great advantage because of basic physical considerations.”

根据第四段中的“Her team suggests being

19

·It can be (59) ________used and it can also allow us to predict both currently living species' and extinct species' speeds. ·It is (60) ________ by some scientists like Mauricio Fuentes, who hopes for more evidence. ‘middlesized’ is of great advantage because of basic physical considerations.”

55.short(er) 信息转换题。根据第四段中的“Animals have a limited amount of time to get up to high speeds ...take a longer time to reach a given absolute speed.”

根据第四段中的“By the time they get up to higher speeds, they have little of this quickly available energy left.”

根据第四段中的“The model shows that maximum speed drops off steeply as animals grow beyond the middle size, and matches what we know about different species' speeds.”

58.opinions/views

59.universally/widely 信息转换题。根据第五段的“Hirt was surprised by the model's universal applicability.”

60.doubted/suspected 信息转换题。根据第六段中的“But some scientists are skeptical of the model until more evidence is presented.”

Overseas study tours are gaining popularity with Chinese parents who want their children to broaden their horizons (视野) and experience a different culture.

Consisting of language courses, sightseeing and international communication, study tours meet the demands of Chinese parents and students for a long and fruitful

20

holiday, despite (尽管) high costs of around 4,000 to 6,000 US dollars.

Last year saw the number of students going abroad for study tours increase by nearly 40 percent, with reservations for tours starting almost a year ago, according to English First, a SwedishEnglish education company in China.

A recent report published by a Chinese tourism booking website showed most study tour participants were teenagers in middle schools.

According to the report released by Tuniu.com, 73 percent of their participants were middle school students, 11 percent primary school students and only 3 percent college students.

Many parents can't help asking: Are overseas study tours for middle school students worthwhile?

1.用约30个单词概述文章信息的主要内容;

In spite of high costs, an increasing number of people, especially middle school students, choose to go abroad for study tours.Meanwhile, there're some parents who question the value of these overseas study tours.

Personally, I believe it's worthwhile for middle school students to take part in such overseas study tours as long as they are organized by reliable companies or organizations.

Above all, students can expand their horizons through such study tours. As the saying goes, “It's better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books.” Travelling abroad offers them good opportunities to experience alien cultures in the flesh. In addition, language skills will be improved.Exposed to the authentic language environment, students have more chances to communicate with natives, thus their spoken English will be more fluent.Last but not least, the tours

21

offer students a good chance to experience independence.Without their parents' company, they have to learn to deal with some unexpected things by themselves.

In the recent years, overseas study tours have appealed to a large number of Chinese, the majority of whom are middle school students. However, some parents feel doubtful about whether it's worthwhile.

As far as I'm concerned, disadvantages of the overseas study tour overweigh its advantages. To begin with, most families can't afford high costs of the tours and these tours will become a fashion for students from wealthy families.Apart from this, language courses included in the tours are too short in that it takes a long time to practice and improve a person's language skills, especially spoken English. Moreover, travelling in China can broaden students' horizons as well. Our country has countless natural beauty and cultural heritage and exploring the treasure of our own country is more worthwhile. Finally, safety should be given thought to when travelling abroad considering middle school students are not old enough to handle some emergencies.
