1 On Skipping Classes
As is shown in the picture, the overwhelming majority of students are absent from class with only one student showing himself up. This picture reveals something true of today's college classroom in China. In fact, stepping into any Chinese college classroom in recent years, chances are that you won't see full attendance. Skipping classes is not uncommon for college students.
Why does such phenomenon occur? Today, college students face pressure from both school and society. In school they have to get enough credits and a high GPA in order to graduate with an impressive resume. However, when they are hunting for jobs, social experience also counts a great deal. So sometimes students have to sacrifice school to social activities such as novitiates.
In my opinion, students should learn to balance the time spent in classrooms and on social activities. Both academic knowledge and social experience are necessary for their future career but school should always come first for a student.
2 Should College Students Follow Fashion?
Today's college students live in a world of fashion and some of them are keen on pursuing fashion all the time. In fact, it is not uncommon to see
some college students dressed in the latest fashion or use mobile phones of the latest styles.
People's view on this phenomenon differs. Some people believe that it is reasonless for college student to follow fashion since fashion changes so quickly and fashionable products cost so much. In contrast, other people hold that it is meaningful to follow fashion as fashionable students tend to be more popular among students.
In my opinion, as long as following fashion will not put a heavy financial burden on them, college students should develop a sense of fashion, but by no means should they go after fashion blindly.
3 On College Students' Taking Part-time Jobs
The picture depicts that a teenage boy is looking for a part-time job in a fast food restaurant and the good news is he may get one. Like this boy, nowadays many college students in China are taking part-time jobs.
As I see it, there are both benefits and drawbacks for college students' taking part-time jobs. On the one hand, in addition to getting an income, college students taking part-time jobs may enjoy a more exciting lifestyle as they can meet people from all walks of life and develop a sense of responsibility which can't be learned in the classroom. On the other hand, students who take part-time jobs may have less time focusing on study, and
if they seek to excel in both the part-time job and study, the busy life they lead may put their health at risk. In my opinion, college students ought to strike a balance between academic study and part-time jobs. And always bear in mind that a student's priority is to acquire knowledge at school.
4 Is Lights-out Regulation Necessary?
Lights-out regulation has been practiced in Chinese colleges and universities for decades. However, in recent years, some universities have removed this regulation: no fixed bedtime for students. Towards this change, people share different views. Some people think schools should keep lights-out regulations so that 8 hours' sleep is guaranteed for each student. However, others welcome the change. They think college students are mature enough to make their own decisions as to when to go to bed. What is more, they argue that pm, which is the regular lights-out time, is too early for an adult. As a college student, I think it is necessary that the school keep the lights-out regulation. College years are important, because during this time good or bad habits are formed. Keeping lights-out regulation can help students to form the good habit of \"early to bed and early to rise\".
5 On Libraries' Service
Libraries are very important in students' campus life. However, many students complain that libraries in their universities cannot meet their need. The first problem of nearly all school libraries is their limited space. There
always seems to be a huge gap between the capacity of the libraries and the number of students who want to study there. The second problem is that the information in the library search system isn't always right. More often than not, the computers show that the book one wants is on the shelf, but he just can never find it. There exist other problems, too, such as small collection of books, noises, poor light and so on. To improve this situation, firstly the universities should expand their libraries according to the practical need. Secondly, a more scientific management and searching system should be introduced. With these measures, students will be able to make better use of the libraries.
6 On Depression on Campus
In recent years, depression has become the biggest mental disease among college students. Every year quite a few students who feel severely depressed just like the man in the picture are reported to commit suicide. Among the reasons that lead to depression, the pressure of interpersonal relationship comes first. Breaking up with boyfriends or girlfriends and conflicts with the mentor always make college students blue. The second reason is the stress of study. Many students feel that the study burden imposed on them exceeds their limit and thus sink into a deep depression. Besides, employment pressure and a sense of inferiority are also important reasons. To reduce the depression on campus, universities should adopt precautionary measures such as promoting psychological education and reducing students' study burden. Parents should care more for their children
and provide them with emotional support when they get frustrated. Above all, college students should learn to adjust their mood and try doing something to cheer themselves up. With due efforts from these three parties, I believe, things will certainly make a change for the better.
7 How Should College Students Spend Their Spare Time?
College is a place where students arrange their own studies and take part in all kinds of activities as they like. Thus, plenty of time is left at college students' disposal. How should college students spend their spare time then? Firstly, it will be very beneficial to brush up a foreign language, so going to an English corner or taking some language courses will be a good way of spending the spare time. Secondly, developing personal interest could also be a good after-school activity. For instance, learning to play some musical instrument or learning painting can bring fun to one's life and help enlarge one's circle of friends. College years are very precious for we are young enough to pick up new skills quickly and old enough to face many challenges. Therefore, it is very important and meaningful to make good use of the spare time in college.
8 My View on University Dorm Life
Some people say that the most interesting and challenging part about university life is the life in dormitory. In university, we share much more time with our roommates, and thus we may have a close relationship with them.
However, sometimes problems arise. 00First, we may find one of our roommates not so easygoing, whose characters are intolerable to us. In addition, due to the busy schedule for study and other activities, we lack time to communicate with our roommates so that we lost each other's trust. Facing these problems, some advice may be helpful. Most crucially, we should not be self-centered when living in a group. Furthermore, it is necessary to spare some time to interact with our roommates and build a good relationship with them. By these efforts, I believe, we can have a memorable dorm life during college years.
9 Live a Low Carbon Life
As is depicted in the symbolic picture, 00the Earth is suffering from high concentrations of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and is in urgent need of help. To help ease this situation, there has come the appeal for people to live a low carbon life in recent years. What can we college students do to live a low carbon life? Personally, I think there are several things we can do. To start with, college students can choose walking or public transportation to help reduce carbon dioxide emission. Secondly, reducing the use of tissues or replacing them with handkerchiefs is another thing college students can choose to do. The huge consumption of tissues means lots of trees being cut down, which reduces the absorption of carbon dioxide. To sum up, college students can live a low carbon life by taking environment-friendly actions. Such actions accumulated can help ensure a green future.
10 How to Improve College Students' Social Skills?
Nowadays many college students suffer from poor social skills. They don't know how to communicate well with others or make friends with others. This may bring them with many disadvantages. The first disadvantage may be a limited friend circle, which means they may be deprived of the benefits and pleasures that a wide circle of friends provides. Other undesirable effects, for instance, a feeling of inferiority, may also appear. To improve this situation, colleges should realize the importance of social skills for students and arrange some courses about social skills in the curriculum schedule. Meanwhile, students themselves should take time off to take part in more social activities. With due efforts from both colleges and students, things will certainly make a change for the better.
11 On Pressure of University Students
Surveys reveal that many university students think they are under pressure. Some of them are in a constant state of anxiety while others take different methods to release pressure. As I see it, assignments of various courses and numerous extra-curricular activities from school life should be counted as one source of pressure as many university students don't know how to balance them. Fierce competition in the job market can be listed as a second pressure. As it is, it has become more and more difficult for college students to find a job when they graduate. Many college students, as a result, are haunted by the fear of being jobless or washed out in the future
job markets. In order to relieve pressure in a proper way, it is suggestive that university students take a look at the sources of their pressure and take appropriate measures to keep it under control. For instance, manage time wisely and work harder to keep one more competitive.
12 A Part-time Job I Have Done
This summer, I worked as an English tutor in a family. My student is a boy in the seventh grade, clever but uninterested in English. It is an interesting job, 00but with quite some challenges. The first problem I had to solve was how to improve the child's learning enthusiasm. I tried to use pictures, stories and prizes to stimulate his interest, which turned out to work well. The second challenge was to improve his poor listening. I found some interesting English cartoons and watched them with him for half an hour every day. After a month, he was able to understand % of the speech in the cartoons. It is a great joy to see my own efforts bear fruit. And I've also learnt from this experience that being a good teacher also requires a sense of humor and teaching skills besides knowledge. I become more determined to dedicate myself to this meaningful career in the future.
13 On Teacher-student Relationship
The relationship between teachers and students is one of the most important and the most sacred relationships in social life. However, in most cases, this relationship is not as satisfying as people expect. There are mainly
two types of poor teacher-student relationships. The first type is characterized by the teacher's excessive attention on his students' performance and the teacher's treating his students differently according to their grade reports. The second type is equally depressing: the students keep their teacher at a distance with disrespect on purpose, and the teacher fights back with indifference and tedious lectures. A healthy relationship between teachers and students, on the contrary, should display such features as mutual respect, active interactions and mutual responsibility. From this kind of relationship, teachers can obtain a sense of achievement and a sense of worth. And students can not only study with a higher efficiency but also with a lighter mood.
14 Should Art and Music Be Added to Compulsory Courses?
In a society where overall qualities are much emphasized, talents with good taste of art and music usually have advantages over their peers. In view of this, into the spotlight comes the question: whether the two subjects should be added to compulsory courses or not. Some people hold that it is essential to upgrade them to compulsory courses in view of increasing the awareness of the importance of these two subjects among students, so that students just will not neglect them anymore. However, to others, those two subjects rising to compulsory courses is far from being appropriate. Students may end up in failure to do well in any subject since their time and energy get too scattered. From my perspective, making art and music compulsory courses is too big a step to be taken in a large scale, considering
the lack of professional teachers and teaching instruments in many schools. But it is highly recommended that some qualified schools start to include these two subjects as required courses.
15 Learning Through Theory or Practice?
Nowadays there has been a heated discussion about the best learning method. Some people argue that priority should be given to studying theories, while others believe that practice is the best way of learning. On the one hand, previous experience and authoritative views in textbooks are regarded as reliable, thorough and systematic knowledge which prevents us from making mistakes. On the other hand, practice provides a down-to-earth learning experience. Such a method enables people to get some valuable practical first-hand information which they will never find from textbooks. From my point of view, the combination of the two works out the best way. In fact, I believe acquiring theories in books and applying them into practice is the most efficient learning method.
16 The Advantages and Disadvantages of Being An Only Child in University Life
Because of the one-child policy, many of the university students today are the only children at home. The traits of being the only child have both positive and negative impacts on students' life in university. On the one hand, these students tend to be more eager to make friends with others for
they understand the loneliness of staying at home by themselves. And they may tend to take a more active part in various activities in universities, which is meaningful for their full round development. On the other hand, these students are more likely to have conflicts with their roommates, since many of them are treated like \"little princes\" or \"little princesses\" at home, which makes them not so tolerant and not so concerned about others. In view of the advantages and disadvantages mentioned above, it is suggestive that university students, who are the only child at home, should try to maximize their strengths and minimize their shortcomings if they have them.
17 On the Popularity of Weibo
Writing miniblog, adding celebrities as friends and having followers or fans do not just sound tempting. In fact, Weibo, or microblog, has become the most popular social networking tool in China. Why does Weibo become such a fashion recently? The major reasons are listed as follows. To start with, in the fast-paced modern society, more often than not, people do not have time to write a long and thorough article on their blog. Therefore, Weibo, which allows 0 words at maximum, is readily accepted. Secondly, Weibo is a fast way to know changes in the world. The information on Weibo updates fast, because every user can contribute to it by posting, forwarding and commenting on the latest news. In my opinion, college students should make good use of Weibo to learn new ideas and communicate with people from all walks of life. However, they should not indulge in it.
18 On Food Safety
As is shown in the picture, a lady with a magnifier is carefully examining the various vegetables laid on the table. In fact, this lady is among the many people who are paying growing attention to food safety. Why do people care so much about food safety lately? There are mainly two reasons for this. First, with the improvement of living standard, people are much more concerned about their health and their demand for quality food increases. Second, there have been a growing number of incidents involving food safety in recent years. Among these incidents, the toxic milk scandal, pesticide-contaminated vegetables and illegal cooking oil have shocked or even scared the nation. As I see it, food safety is closely related to people's health, so it is of great significance that the government take effective measures to ensure that food safety is well guaranteed.
19 On Urbanization
The World Expo has turned \"city life\" into a heated issue. Evidence mounts that a better city does make people's life better. However, urbanization has brought about problems as well. On the one hand, urbanization boosts regional economy and introduces more technologies, which enhance people's living standard. Residents are able to enjoy not only convenient transportation, but also various types of entertainment. On the other hand, along with regional development, there also comes pollution. Car exhausts, factory emissions and wasted water damage the environment
and city expansion causes extinctions of certain species. Moreover, there have been a growing number of people in city suffering from sub-health problems and physical and mental fatigue due to the stressful and rapid-paced life. From my viewpoint, urbanization does bring benefits to our lives. Yet, we should by no means ignore the problems that it causes and take measures to handle them.
20 On TV Talent Shows
Nowadays TV talent shows have become very popular and it is not uncommon to see many young people attend these shows. TV talent shows, as is the case with many issues, have both merits and demerits. On the one hand, these shows can provide excellent opportunities for the young people to express themselves and to perform their talents of singing, dancing, and so on. On the other hand, they may mislead the youth and make them believe that they can make a big fortune or become famous overnight, ignoring the fact of \"No pains, no gains.\" As far as I am concerned, TV talent show is like a double-edged sword, which can do both good and harm. It is extremely important for us to face it properly.
21 On College Students Getting Married
In the past, Chinese college students were not allowed to get married and if married, they must quit school. However, college students today can get married as long as they have reached the legal marriage age. Regarding
college students' getting married, people's opinions vary from person to person. Some people think that getting married in college would disturb the normal order of schools. In addition, most college students are neither emotionally nor financially prepared to start a family. Rushing into marriage may result in big problems in the future. Nevertheless, other people claim that college students have their right to get married. As long as they are well prepared and think thoroughly, we should respect their choices. In my opinion, college students should give careful consideration to the responsibilities of starting a family before rushing to get married.
22 On Plastic Surgery
In recent years, getting plastic surgery has become a new fashion among young people, 00although its safety has received much doubt. Ads promoting such surgery as is depicted in the picture can be found in many places. Why are young people keen on seeking plastic surgery? The reasons behind can be listed as below. Firstly, today's youngsters consider plastic operations as a form of worshipping their beloved stars. Plastic operations have become no rare phenomenon in entertainment circle. Crazy young fans tend to imitate what their idols do, including having plastic surgeries. Secondly, they receive those operations to increase their competitiveness in job-hunting. As the competition in job market is becoming fiercer and fiercer, everybody tries his/her best to become more competitive. Under such condition, having plastic surgery and becoming prettier is one means. As far as I am concerned, youngsters should give it a second thought when
making such a big decision as having plastic surgeries. After all, there exist great risks in those operations.
23 On Celebrities Accepted by Universities
Nowadays, it is no surprise to find out that you enter the same university with a celebrity. Many colleges and universities in China are more than happyt o enroll a film star or a sports star. Heated discussion has been generated by this phenomenon. It is held by some people that colleges and universities should take the lead in providing equal opportunities for each candidate and therefore no exception should be made on celebrities. However, others disagree with the view mentioned above. They argue that celebrities like film stars or sports stars, .00who contribute to our society in one way or another, deserve a more tolerant attitude and therefore a more flexible policy on their further education. As far as I am concerned, the current practice with regards to celebrities' admission to universities should be improved and made more transparent. For instance, it is feasible to require celebrities to pass tests with equal importance to the national entrance examination before admission.
24 On Celebrity Making Mistakes
In recent years, newspaper headlines have seen many celebrities' scandals. Cases such as some celebrities' drunk driving or drug abuse have aroused great public concern. Some people think it very improper for
celebrities to behave immorally and they should be severely punished. Besides, as public figures, they should set a good example to the public, especially at the time when youngsters are looking up to them. Others think the public may be too harsh on celebrities. After all, \"To err is human, to forgive, divine.\" Personally, I think as the celebrities are models of millions of young people, they should watch their own behave ours at all times. However, as to the media coverage, I think the public should show some tolerance.
25 On the Importance of Teamwork
Teamwork, as the mainstream way of doing business, cannot be emphasized more in the modern world. There are programs designed to improve one's teamwork ability; team spirit is deeply engraved in the mind of each social man. Why does teamwork become so important? Two major reasons are listed as follows. To start with, only through effective teamwork can we achieve success. Behind each business miracle or each successful man, there is a big team supporting and contributing. The huge success of Apple products should be attributed to teamwork rather than the personal accomplishment of Steve Jobs. The importance of teamwork is not only reflected on achieving success, but also on the issue of survival. In modern society, we know very well that no one can survive by himself. Every loaf of bread, every article of clothes, every house or apartment is the product of cooperative efforts. To sum up, teamwork is such an essential ability that we college students should seize every chance to develop. At least, do not keep
silent during group discussion in class next time.
26 On the Homebody Phenomenon
In the modern society, there appears a new group of young people who are given a name---homebody. This group of youngsters prefers spending time doing indoor activities to going out, just like the girl in the picture, and the number of people in this group seems to be on a rise. Why does such phenomenon occur? First, unlike people in the past, with modern communication technology, people now could get in touch with one another without leaving his or her room. Second, life indoors is no less wonderful than that in the outside world. People can watch movies, do physical exercise, sing karaoke and even work at home. As a college student, I find many of my peers staying at dormitories all day long. However, I do not think it is a healthy way of life. Young people should be encouraged to go outdoors more frequently and socialize with others.
27 On Chinese Fever
Chinese language learning has been constantly heating up all over the world. It is reported that Chinese is taught in more than 0 countries and millions of overseas people are learning Chinese. Why does Chinese fever sweep the world? There are mainly two reasons. To begin with, it has become a consensus that China is the biggest market in the world, thus many foreigners learn Chinese in order to obtain more opportunities.
Furthermore, as the political and economic status of China has been greatly enhanced in the past decades, Chinese culture has also been widely spread. Numerous people are fascinated by China and are eager to learn its language so that they can understand its culture better. I think that Chinese fever indeed reflects the influence of China in the world. 00However, I hope that personal interest, rather than economic benefits, will become the main reason for learning Chinese. And I expect more exchanges between different minds and cultures can benefit our country.
28 On Academic Cheating
Nowadays, \"academic cheating\" has been a high frequency phrase in media reports. From time to time, names of some professors appear in scandals of academic cheating. They deliberately copy other scholars' research results in their own papers and books. Why does cheating become a usual phenomenon in this field? First and foremost, it is because some scholars lack personal integrity. In order to obtain higher academic status, they are willing to betray their conscience. Second, academic field is inevitably affected by the climate of pursuing fame and money. The heated competition for titles and subsidy stimulates academic cheating. Third, the academic review system does little work to find out the piratic contents or prevent the illegal articles from being published. In my opinion, the short-term benefits such as fame and money are indeed charming to everyone. However, one should resist this kind of temptations, for if academic cheating is disclosed, one may lose not only his reputation and money, but also his
freedom.
29 On Computer Game Addiction
As is depicted in the picture, a young man is telling his friend his plan to overcome computer game addiction. Like this young man, large numbers of teenagers are reportedly addicted to computer games in China now. Many of them consequently are near-sighted, abandon their study and isolate themselves. Why do so many teenagers indulge in computer games? Basically there are two reasons. Firstly, parents are to blame for neglecting their duty to educate their children to play computer moderately. Secondly, teenagers feel either frustrated or dull in the real life and are thirsty for a sense of fulfillment in computer games. Since computer games bring about hazards, effective measures should be taken to prevent more teenagers from indulging in them. To begin with, it is necessary for parents to help their children find satisfaction in other helpful interests. Furthermore, teenagers should face up to the difficulties and pressure in the real life rather than seek refuge from them. By these efforts, it is hopeful that this problem could be solved.
30 Will High Technology Eliminate Cultural Diversity?
Thanks to high technologies, the earth has become \"flat\". People of different nationalities and color scan know about each other through the Internet and even interact with each other by means of communication
equipment. People's view differs toward this phenomenon. Some of them are afraid that cultures of different nations may converge as on edue to more interaction brought about by high technologies. Whereas, some others hold that people seem to have a lot more in common under the impact of high technologies, but their inner worlds are in fact deeply rooted into different soils and their cultures will not merge together easily. In my opinion, high technology has indeed provided a platform for cultural exchanges. Nevertheless, cultural diversity won't be eliminated because it is a complex of conception, customs, languages and so on, which is too strong to be assimilated. Instead, culture needs development, and it can develop better by learning from other cultures with the help of high technology.
31 A Famous University Graduate's Embarrassment
Elite schools do not always promise a bright future. Nowadays many graduates from first-class universities cannot find a satisfactory job. There are mainly two reasons for this embarrassing phenomenon. First, the severe employment situation at present inevitably affects these graduates' job hunting, despite their excellent educational background. Second, these students usually are unwilling to start from a humble job. There is often a wide gap between the salaries they expect and those that enterprises are ready to offer to new graduates. Since the hope of an immediate improvement in the employment situation is slim, main efforts should be made by these students themselves. Firstly, these students should accumulate more working experience before graduation so as to make
themselves more competitive in the job market. Secondly, they should set aside their pride and accept a comparatively low-paid job but with great potential. After all, the way to success is not always smooth from the start.
32 My View on College Town
The boom of building college towns is attracting much attention in recent years. Such college towns can be found in many cities, especially in big ones. The reasons for this boom can be concluded as follows. Firstly, the universities want to reduce their construction costs and increase their interaction with other colleges by joining a college town. In a college town, a university can share resources with other universities and enjoy the convenience the comprehensive infrastructure gives. Secondly, the local governments hope to stimulate local economic development by a college town. The huge number of college students can not only create a large consumer group for that region, but also attract enterprises to settle down nearby. From my point of view, building college towns in big cities is the trend of the times. These college towns have lived up to expectations basically, since they realize the sharing of resources between universities and bring about economic growth.
33 On More Attention Be Paid to English than Chinese
In China, English has clearly gained much more attention than Chinese, which is rare in other countries in the world. Anything with connection, even
a remote one, to English is bound to flourish, such as bilingual summer camp. This phenomenon has been in the spotlight for some time. Some people argue that the unbalanced situation will put China's traditional culture in danger since language is the medium of culture. However, according to a different view, more emphasis put on English is not necessarily a bad sign. To those who hold this view, English is exactly what we need to know and learn from western countries, which is crucial to China's rise. From my mind's view, recognizing the importance of English should not hinder us from pursuing more understanding of our own language and culture. Therefore, we should devote as much time and energy to Chinese as to English.
34 How to Limit the Damage Caused by Natural Disasters?
Due to either cyclical changes or human interventions, there has been an increase in natural disasters in recent years. Earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes have taken numerous lives throughout the world. What can we do to prevent damage and minimize loss? First and foremost, people should by all means take measures to protect the environment. Methods such as recycling and using renewable energy should be advocated to help us save resources. Secondly, advanced technologies in disaster prediction are of great importance. Precise forecast ahead of time is crucial for people to survive. So the government should pay more attention to forecasting technology and allocate more funds to support related research and development programs. As a university student, I will work as a volunteer
to help raise the public's environmental protection awareness. More importantly, I would like to teach survival skills during disasters to the people in my university and community.
35 My View on Outer Space Exploration
Since the first landing on the moon, men have never lost their enthusiasm for outer space exploration. Billions of funds have been spent, quite some lives have been sacrificed, and meanwhile secretes of the universe have been gradually discovered. However, people's view on outer space exploration differs greatly. Some people think it is meaningless to allocate large budget to study such issues as whether there are other intelligent beings in outer space. In contrast, others argue that it is worthwhile to invest time and money into the scientific research of outer space because it can help us understand the universe better. From my perspective, it is necessary to continue exploring outer space because what we learn in outer space can influence the future of the earth. The more we know about the universe, the better we can understand our position as human beings in this planet where we live and thus live harmoniously with nature.
36 On Online Communication
Online communication has become an important means of communication in the modern world. Instant messaging softwares like QQ
or MSN and social networking sites such as facebook have drawn a vast number of young users. It is true that online communication brings the world together, but at the same time problems can come out. Now since almost everybody can reach others without moving a single step, it is common that even college mates living next door prefer online chatting to face-to-face talk. Combined with the fact that there are fewer people writing letters, this means gradually people will miss the fun of getting together, of meeting friends in real life and of waiting for a letter from beloved ones. In my opinion, we should not rely solely on online communication. It is necessary to spend some time to stay with our friends and beloved ones in real world.
37 Will traditional classroom education be replaced by online education?
As we can see from the picture, a girl who has just enrolled in an online education program is happily telling her parents about this news. Like this girl, in recent years large numbers of people have turned to online education for degrees and improvement. As a result, some people begin to get concerned about the traditional classroom education: will it be replaced by online education? Some people answer yes to the above question. To them, convenience is the incomparable feature online education possesses. It is possible for one with a full-time job to attend various education programs, thanks to the easy access to online education resources. In contrast, other people hold that classroom education is irreplaceable because of the interaction it involves. In the traditional classroom setting,
students can discuss with each other and even challenge teachers, which online education clearly lacks. From my perspective, classroom education, whose merits have long been recognized, will not be replaced. Instead, it will be supplemented by online education.
38 On Personal Privacy in Cyberspace
Nowadays, the most annoying problem in the cyberspace is the violation of personal privacy. Cell phone numbers are sold for business usages; moreover, some accounts and passwords of e-banks are stolen and consequently personal savings are lost. Why is personal privacy so easily violated in cyberspace? First, the legislature is responsible for the delay of making laws against such violation. Second, criminals take advantage of the flaws of the Internet system and steal personal information for indecent purposes. Third, some netizens put their important personal information on websites accidentally, giving others chances to pry into their privacy. In order to stop the violation, effective measures should be taken immediately. Most urgently, laws about cyberspace should be constituted as soon as possible and enforced strictly. Besides, netizens should be alert and not to put their important personal information online. Only by the joint effort of the whole society can cyberspace have a sound environment.
39 Digital Reading or Traditional Reading?
With new technology, ebook develops fast in recent years and takes a
significant market share. Taking up less space and portability are the advantages of ebooks. Therefore, digital reading is seen by many ebook users as a replacement of traditional reading. Nonetheless, in spite of the popularity of digital reading, there are still lots of book lovers who claim that digital reading will never take the place of traditional reading. They think the feel of turning pages and the pleasure of taking notes by pen can never be reproduced by digital reading. In my mind's eye, the relationship between digital reading and traditional reading can be compared to that between mp3 music and a concert. The mp3 music is convenient but the concert brings an entirely different experience; the same is true with digital reading and traditional reading. It's better to have both of them.
40 Will Online Translation Tools Eliminate Foreign Language Learning?
There emerges a variety of online language tools, which can translate words instantly. Many of them can even translate long sentences, which can't be matched by most of digital dictionaries. It surely will be of great help to those who aren't good at foreign language. However, does this mean that we don't need to learn foreign languages anymore? Those people who consider foreign language learning a nightmare say yes. Thanks to the invention of translation tools, they don't need to remember lots of words and grammars in order to understand an article written in foreign language. In contrast, other people don't think so. One simple reason is that access to online translation tools is not always available. Besides, what these translation tools translate is not always correct. For my part, college
students shouldn't neglect foreign language learning for any reason. We can use these tools in language studies, but never rely too much on them.
41 On Network Language
Recently, using network language in daily communication has become very popular among the youth. When talking with others, they tend to use some special words, abbreviations or synonyms which are widely acknowledged in the online community. People hold different opinions towards this phenomenon. Some people agreed that many of the network languages are more vivid and interesting than ordinary ones. Therefore, they believe that using network language can not only enrich our ways of expression but also entertain us. In contrast, others argue that the network language shouldn't be mixed in daily communication, otherwise the harmony and beauty of standard expressions can be damaged. Moreover, the misuse of network language has a bad impact on children's language learning. As far as I am concerned, it is acceptable to use some network language in oral communication on some informal occasions. However, it's much wiser to use standard language in order to show your sincerity and respect on formal occasions.
42 On Sub-health Condition
Experts say that quite a number of people who are to years old are under sub-health condition. They are not suffering from obvious diseases
but their physical functions are in a weak state. Why are these people, who are in their golden ages, in sub-health condition? First, people aged between and are so busy with their study or work that they can't spare enough time for physical exercise. Second, air pollution and water pollution affect our lives so badly that we could hardly maintain a good health. In order to get rid of sub-health, it is of great importance that we do outdoor exercise frequently to remove weariness and have our body refreshed. Besides, governments should try harder to protect the environment so that people have fresher air to breathe and cleaner water to drink.
43 On Outdoor Exercise in Modern Life
In recent years, it has become a widespread problem that people, especially those who live in cities, don't have enough outdoor exercise. Consequently, more and more people are under sub-health condition and they are apt to fall sick. The major reasons for people lacking outdoor exercise can be listed as follows. Firstly, the increased competition in modern society forces people to sacrifice their exercise time for hard work. Secondly, the business and housing buildings spring up like mushrooms everywhere; therefore, more and more vacant lands for people to do exercise are occupied. Considering the seriousness of this problem, effective efforts should be made. Most importantly, people should value health more than work so that they could spare more time for physical training. Furthermore, it is necessary that more parks be opened up for free so that people could have a place to go when they need outdoor exercise.
44 On Foreign Language Learning at an Early Age
In recent years, parents have attached greater importance to their children's education at an early age than before. Foreign language learning, for its obvious value in the modern world, has become the first choice. Different opinions can be perceived with regard to this phenomenon. One voice is that the earlier children start to learn a foreign language, the more they can benefit from it for the reason that foreign language learning achieves most at an early age. In contrast, other people argue that foreign language learning deprives children of the time they should spend exploring the world, which is irreplaceable in their growth. For my part, foreign language learning should never be put before children master their mother tongues, for children's language skill needs to develop enough to accept a different language system.
45 Is A Tutor Necessary?
Tutors have become more and more popular in recent years. Many parents hire tutors for their children lest their children be left in a disadvantageous position. This phenomenon arouses much controversy. Some think that school education is not enough for children. A tutor can make up for the inadequacy of school education and teach children according to their capabilities. But other people look at this with certain uneasiness. They believe a tutor often adds to children's study burden rather than improves their study. So far as I am concerned, whether a tutor is
necessary or not depends on each child's practical situation. There are cases in which children do get much help from tutors. But there are also instances that tutors prove to be more harmful than helpful. Therefore, parents can hire a tutor when their children really need one. However, they should never do so as a result of following suit.
46 Generation Gap between Parents and Children
The picture depicts a phenomenon that exists widely among parents and children: generation gap. Nowadays, the problem of generation gap is a serious issue for many parents and their children, which makes both of them suffer. Why does this problem occur? The rapid changes in all social aspects in modern society is the most important reason for the existence of this gap. The factors that form parents' philosophies are much different from those that shape the children's, and thus a generation gap appears. Another reason is that parents do not have much time to be together with their children, for parents are busy with their work while children focus on their study. Thus, the generation gap broadens for lack of communication. To narrow this generation gap, parents should strive to know the thoughts and needs of their children and spend more time with them, while children should also care for and communicate with their parents.
47 On Regional Unbalance in Educational Development
Although education in China has been greatly developed in the past
decades, there is a big gap of education qualities between coastal and interior regions. Why is education in our country so unbalanced? There are two major reasons. From a general perspective, economic condition affects the regional education development. Poor regions can't afford advanced teaching facilities or attract excellent teachers. Besides, people in those poor areas don't think education is very important and tend to send their children to work rather than study. In light of the seriousness of this problem, effective measures should be taken immediately. First of all, it is crucial that our government should allocate more budgets to develop education in those interior regions. Second, it is necessary to greatly publicize the advantages of receiving good education.
48 How to Protect Consumers' Rights?
We hear this saying \"consumers first\" very often. However, the truth is that in many cases, consumers' rights are severely violated and harmed. For instance, when consumers ask for a refund, many dealers refuse it with all kinds of excuses. Some claim compensation for the losses some products cause, but the dealers just ignore their requests. The saddest thing is that many even don't know how to protect their rights. The protection of consumers' rights requires efforts from three aspects. Firstly, laws should be improved to regulate dealers' behaviors and be enforced strictly. Secondly, the media should fulfill their function of supervision, revealing dealers' illegal conducts and arousing consumers' legal awareness. Thirdly, consumers should equip themselves with necessary legal knowledge so as
to protect their rights with the law. With the perfection of laws, the supervision of media and the increasing legal consciousness of consumers, consumers' legal rights and interests can surely be defended.
49 How to Reduce Traffic Jams
The picture vividly portrays a big headache for many cities: traffic jams, which not only create more air pollution in the city, but also bring much inconvenience to the citizens.00The rapid increase in the number of private cars obviously should be responsible for this problem. As cars become more affordable, many people choose to go to work by car instead of using public transportation, which makes the traffic condition much worse. Besides, traffic control and road planning of the city are not always in step with the growth of the number of cars. To change this situation, strong measures should be taken. Firstly, rules should be carried out to control the number of private cars. Secondly, methods should be worked out to improve the efficiency of traffic control and rationalization of road planning. Last but not least, citizens should be encouraged to use public transportation. With these efforts, the traffic jams will be hopefully eased.
50 Do Students Need to Wear School Uniforms?
It is not new to see students wearing school uniforms. In fact, most schools in China, both public and private, require their students to wear school uniforms. People's opinions are divided on this issue. Some people
hold that wearing school uniforms is beneficial to students in that they cannot judge their peers by the clothes they wear. Therefore, students, no matter from poor or rich families, are equal in this regard. In contrast, others think that wearing school uniform as a harmful impact on students' individuality, which certainly does no good to their development. Taking different opinions into account, I believe school uniform is an indispensable part of school life due to its many merits, but we should not put too much emphasis on it.
51 On Constellations Craze
In recent years, constellations have become a very hot topic among young people and the favorite subject of many best sellers. Many young people, under the influence of such books, believe there is a mysterious connection between one's character and his constellation. Sometimes they even go so far as to decide what types of boyfriends or girlfriends fit them according to the suggestions on those books. This childish superstition seems quite absurd in such an enlightened era, but there are good reasons for this. Firstly, this craze results more from youngsters' curiosity for self-understanding than from a blind superstition. The youth are eager to learn about themselves, and books on constellations provide them with a good chance to explore themselves. Secondly, those books, full of flattering words, are easy to be accepted and believed. My advice is that constellation analysis can serve as an amusement; however, youngsters should never let them affect themselves too deeply.
52 Good Wine Needs No Bush?
There is a proverb that \"good wine needs no bush\which means products that are well-made do not need to be advertised. In the old ages, this used to be a common belief. However, in modern times it has become controversial. Most of the businessmen today hold that even the best commodity would hardly sell well without successful advertisement. Nevertheless, quite a number of others believe that products of competitive quality will be well received even without being advertised. I firmly believe that products of high quality can sell well eventually even without being advertised, but indeed it is not wise to neglect advertising for it is an effective way to inform customers of the merits of one's products.
53 My View on Losing Weight
Nowadays, a growing number of women, either young or old, are eager to lose weight. They try very hard to be on a diet and do excessive exercise to quicken weight loss. Is it necessary to try every effort to pursue a slim figure? It is a controversial question. Almost the entire society is in favor of losing weight, and it seems to be a common belief that thinness is equal to beauty, for most popular actresses are slim. However, there are still quite a few people who consider losing weight a waste of money and energy and may cause health problems. In my view, we should not follow the trend of losing weight blindly. It is advisable to lose weight only if it affects your normal life and health. Otherwise, just love your imperfect figure and live
happily without being annoyed by others' standard.
54 Should Setting off Fireworks Be Forbidden?
It has been an age-old tradition for the Chinese to set off fireworks in festive occasions. Many people like to light fireworks to their heart's content, just like the two children shown in the picture. However, in recent years, seeing that setting off fireworks causes accidents and air pollution, some people claim that shooting off fireworks should be strictly forbidden. Firework supporters do not agree. They argue that shooting off fireworks is an important part of China's folk culture and should not be banned. I am in favor of calling a halt to setting off fireworks. First of all, it's almost impossible to prevent accidents while fireworks are available to individuals. In order to completely stop sorrows, we need a non-firework society. Second, we can celebrate festivals in a cleaner way. For example, we can replace fireworks with colorful balloons which are more environment-friendly while equally entertaining.
55 My View on Travel
As a popular form of leisure and entertainment, travel is what many people look forward to when they are free. Experiencing DIY tours or accepting package tours provided by travel agents is a choice facing many potential travelers. People who are in favor of package tour emphasize that travelers should enjoy the convenience brought by travel agents. They do
not want to take the trouble to book tickets, hotels and fix all the trivial matters. However, lots of people, especially the young, prefer DIY tours. They believe DIY tour enables them to explore travel destinations to the full by planning routes and deciding the sites to visit by themselves. For my part, although exciting, a DIY tour is not suitable for one who travels alone, taking safety and emergencies which might occur into account. Safety should always come first.
56 My View on Studying Abroad
Studying abroad has grown to be more and more popular in recent years. It is reported that the number of Chinese people studying abroad has almost doubled in the last decade. However, people hold different opinions towards this phenomenon. Some people think that it is worthwhile and necessary for students to get an overseas degree, which will help them find a better job. On the contrary, others believe studying abroad is not only a waste of money but also cuts off most of the connection and social network one has at home. In addition, the efforts to adjust to the new life abroad may also affect students' study. From my point of view, provided that it will not bring too much financial burden to the family, studying abroad has more advantages than drawbacks. Job hunting aside, it is a perfect chance for young people to broaden their horizon and enrich their life experiences.
57 On the Popularity of Western Restaurants
In recent years, China has witnessed the prosperity of western restaurants. Besides fast food restaurants like KFC and McDonald's, the western exclusive restaurants have been increasing in big cities. The popularity of western restaurants is based on the following reasons. First, as the income of Chinese people has increased, more and more people can easily afford the higher-priced western food. Second, western restaurants bring exotic cultures to those who never had a chance to travel overseas. Last but not least, western restaurants tend to attract kids and young people, most of whom are fond of new food, putting emphasis on different tastes from traditional Chinese food. As far as I am concerned, western restaurants help stimulate the development of traditional Chinese restaurants as they bring along advanced management and standard production process. What's more, it is a great pleasure to taste food of various nations and flavors without stepping out of the country.
58 The Impact of TV Programs on the Public
The picture shows that a father is angrily breaking the TV screen for he believes there is too much violence on TV. This thought-provoking picture prompts me to have a look at the impact of TV programs so that I can make the best use of TV programs while at the same time guard against their negative influences. Just as every coin has two sides, TV programs have both advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, they can add spices to our lives by providing us with all kinds of information and entertainment. On the other hand, they can exert negative impacts on the public, too. To begin
with, children who are still lack of judgement tend to be misled due to the contents of violence, sex and drug abuse on TV. Additionally, with TV programs occupying much of our time, we lack time to communicate with others. Hence there comes the extending gap among people. As I see it, we should mind ourselves when watching TV. To be more specific, we should be cautious about negative impact of TV programs.
59 College Graduate Boom
The graph demonstrates that the number of college graduates is growing rapidly. In there were only 2. million graduates, while in, the number has risen up to 7 million, which is more than one time of the former. This phenomenon arouses a deep concern about the severe employment situation of college graduates. In fact, it is reported that due to the excessive number of job-hunters and the limited job vacancies, a few graduates find it hard to locate a suitable job and therefore have to rely on their parents for living while some others choose to shelter in the post-graduate schools for further study. To solve this problem, it is suggestive that more job opportunities should be created for graduates. Besides, undergraduate students should try their best to equip themselves with more professional skills. With these joint efforts, it is hopeful that this difficulty can be overcome.
60 Reading Classics or Popular Books?
Books are good companions in our lives. Every time we are bored or down, we can always turn to a book at hand, which instantly opens a new world to us, where we can lead different lives and experience various adventures. People's view differs with regard to whether to read classics or popular books. Some claim that we should read classics as they offer us an access to the great wisdom of the literature giants at home and abroad. Reading these books enlightens us and makes us think about our lives. In contrast, other people believe that we should read popular books as they are easy to understand and can relieve our pressure from a burdened life in such a hustle and bustle world. As far as I am concerned, we should read both kinds of books. Classics help us form our values and outlook on life, while popular books make our lives more colorful.
61 Why Famous People Have High Incomes?
It seems that money is always a companion of fame. Among the high-income groups, many owe their large revenues to fame, such as writers, singers and sports stars. One may ask, why do famous people tend to have higher incomes? For one thing, I believe, the fame of the celebrities provides them with more opportunities to earn money than common people. For another, the celebrities do not get their fame for no reason. They usually become distinguished for an outstanding ability, like extraordinary writing or singing gifts, which is apt to reward them with a respectable income. Some people think it's unfair that famous people get rich easier. But in my opinion, to include fame as an income factor is an inevitable tendency. The
celebrities have the right to obtain profits for their fame, though improper means to gain them should never be encouraged.
62 Is University Education Useless?
Among the people well-known to us, many have never been educated in a university. But they still obtain great achievements, either by their diligent efforts or remarkable talents. From this fact, some people draw the conclusion that university education is useless. In my point of view, the opinion above is too radical. In general, people who have received higher education are more likely to achieve success than people who haven't, for their broader vision, larger social network, as well as better opportunities. Therefore, a university education should be encouraged. However, a university education is definitely not the only decisive factor of being successful. At the same time, we can't ignore other important factors of success, such as gifts, diligence and other conditions. In a word, I don't think university education is useless. University education should continue to be promoted. However, we should also keep in mind that one's success doesn't depend solely on a university degree.
63 On Overseas Tourism
As is shown in the graph, the number of Chinese tourists traveling abroad increases rapidly year by year. In there were just a little more than million tourists who traveled overseas, while in that number has increased
to over million. Why did overseas tourism thrive in China? There are mainly two reasons. First, thanks to the flourishing economy, many Chinese people can afford to take trips to see different parts of the world. Second, an increasing number of foreign tourism organisations are using advertisement and special price reduction to attract Chinese tourists, which has effectively promoted the trend of overseas travel in China. As I see it, the growing number indicates that a good many Chinese nowadays can not only meet their basic needs but also have luxury enjoyment, which is a great economical progress. Besides, as overseas tours can broaden one's horizon and increase cultural exchanges, it is a good phenomenon that more and more Chinese are traveling abroad.
64 Interest Counts
\"A burden of one's choice is not felt\": This is not a saying about burden, but one about the importance of interest. If all the choices we have made during our entire life are based on our interest, we will enjoy a life free from burden in this regard. Interest exerts its influence on every milestone of our life, such as our academic achievement, course choices and career decisions. Take career decisions as an example. Among many practical concerns are salary, career prospects and work environment, but above all, it is interest that counts. If we follow our interest, it will translate into great passion or motivation by which we overcome one obstacle after another. In turn, it can lead to tremendous personal satisfaction and professional success. In conclusion, interest is a powerful stimulus that draws our passion to any
given activity. Only when we stay inspired and motivated can we generate fresh ideas and push ourselves to go further.
65 Better Aim High than Low
When it comes to life goals, it is often believed that we'd better aim high than low, as the saying goes, \"If you don't aim high, you'll never hit high.\" A high aim, or an ambitious dream, can bring out the best in people. In other words, challenging goals that are more difficult to realize can inspire people to keep working harder and do their best. The Wright Brothers dreamed of making a flying machine for humans. It was doubted and deemed as completely crazy. However, they were determined, and eventually devised the world's first airplane. If the Wright Brothers had had more \"realistic\" goals, they would hardly have achieved such a success. Evidently, such ambitious dreams can also prompt the development of the whole society. To summarize, aiming high can not only motivate us to maximize our potential and attain more significant achievements, but also promote social progress. Therefore, better aim high than low, and you will discover a new world that opens up to you.
66 On the Importance of Curiosity
The saying that \"not to know is bad; not to wish to know is worse\" best illustrates the importance of curiosity, a desire to know, a hunger to explore and a delight to discover. Without curiosity, human beings would never
reach the civilization today. Curiosity motivates us to uncover the truth about nature and life. It takes a curious mind to look beneath the surface and discover new worlds and possibilities. Were it not for curiosity, Newton would never have developed the law of gravitation, nor would the continents of America or Australia be discovered. Being curious allows us to engage in activities that will stretch the boundaries of our mind and naturally broaden our horizons. Fortunately, curiosity is a habit that can be nurtured and developed. To be more specific, we need to approach the world with a child-like habit of asking questions. With practice, 00we are sure to transform everyday tasks into enjoyable experiences and lay the ground for future discoveries and opportunities.
67 Attitude Makes a Big Difference
There goes a saying that \"a pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty\". This saying tells us that optimists and pessimists adopt opposite attitudes 00towards problems, and their ability to cope with hardship differs as a result. In fact, optimists and pessimists have fundamentally different ways of interpreting the world. Specifically, optimistic people believe that negative events are temporary, limited in scope, and manageable, while pessimistic people tend to view problems as internal, widespread and unchangeable. It is generally believed that people who carry an optimistic outlook are more resourceful and productive. Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister during World War II, was a typical example of an optimist.
When the whole Britain lost confidence in defeating Germany, his optimism carried Britain through the horror of the war. To sum up, attitude does make a big difference. An optimist is confident and strives to see all the possibilities. In order to become optimists ourselves, we should learn to face daily struggles with confidence and make best use of all options available.
68 It Pays to Focus One's Efforts
\"Person who chases two rabbits catches neither.\" The proverb tells us that people should focus their efforts, instead of putting eggs in different baskets. Yet perception is not always reality. Say in China, businessmen try to engage in politics, while officials are desirous of wealth. One's efforts are limited at a given time; therefore it pays to focus his/her efforts. To begin with, anyone who focuses his/her efforts on what he/she holds passion for has a higher possibility to succeed. For instance, Kobe Bryant has been fully dedicated to the Lakers since graduation from high school, and he had won several champions for the team and for himself as well. In addition, having people focus efforts is a good way to uphold work ethic, because they will fully devote themselves to their jobs. Some say, never put all your eggs in one basket. Truly, it applies to investment and many other things, but not one's efforts. Technically, it is very hard to kill two birds with one stone. So, stay hungry, stay focused.
69 It Is Meaningful to Learn from Past Mistakes
Most people dislike making mistakes because they cause embarrassment and even humiliation. But actually it is meaningful to learn from past mistakes, as the saying goes, \"We learn wisdom from failure much more than from success… and probably he who never made a mistake never made a discovery.\" Past mistakes can be pretty helpful if they are dealt with properly. We can by making mistakes gradually rule out the faulty possibilities and eventually find out the best solution .For example, Thomas Edison failed more than a thousand times before he finally discovered the ideal filament for the light bulb. Meanwhile, we can grow stronger and tougher in mental terms by learning from the painful lessons, having a big heart for future success. To err is human; we should not be afraid of making mistakes. More importantly, we should learn from mistakes and by doing so correct ourselves, and progress to success.
70 How to Be Creative
How to be creative? It is said that \"to live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong\becoming a creative thinker. Creativity is a problem-solving technique 00that can be nurtured and even enhanced if we focus on the following two points. The first one is to fully devote ourselves to developing and sustaining creativity. We need to adjust our mindset and believe in ourselves because creative ideas are inclined to confront resistance from those who feel either uncomfortable with or threatened by new changes. The second one is not to be afraid of making mistakes as is indicated in the saying.
When it comes to creativity, the man who does not make mistakes is unlikely to make anything. With mistakes comes the possibility of failure, but it is the possible failure and the perseverance to keep on trying that enhance our creative ability. In a word, to be creative, we should eliminate negative thoughts that may hurt our creativity and fight against our fear of failure.
71 The Importance of Mutual Understanding
In every great faith and tradition, one can find the values of tolerance and mutual understanding, as the saying goes. It highlights the importance of mutual understanding, a virtue which is often absent from our daily life. A typical case in point is international relations. Mutual understanding is important in many aspects. To begin with, it helps to uphold a country's dignity since mutual understanding is based on mutual respect. In addition, mutual understanding boosts effective communication. If the Cold War had continued, the world would not be what it is now. Finally, mutual understanding facilitates problem-solving. People are increasingly aware that global warming could not be solved without mutual understanding in international community. The importance of mutual understanding goes far beyond what's mentioned above. Chances are that lack of mutual understanding might ignite wars between nations. Therefore, it's not difficult to see that mutual understanding should be cultivated anytime anywhere.
72 Better Act Now than Later
Since childhood, I always like to put off things to the last moment, whether homework or housework. For this I have been urged, blamed, or scolded, once and again.\" Don't put off till tomorrow what should be done today,\" my parents and teachers often say. Pitifully, however, I let them down. Worse still, it is not just me; it seems I am just one soldier of a grand army. Common as it is, delaying intentionally and habitually turns out to be rather harmful. First of all, it ruins the notion of punctuality, .00a virtue of modern civilization. Let me explain, if we put things off, chances are good that we often fail to meet the deadline. Secondly, the quality of our work may suffer. With deadline approaching, people will rush to get the work done;
usually more haste, less speed, not to mention quality.\" Better act now than later\just harming ourselves, but also hurting those who care about us.
73 On Seizing Opportunity
History has taught us that opportunity is essential to success. Napoleon Bonaparte said \"ability is of little account without opportunity.\" Many people believe that all men are equal before opportunity, in other words, \"every dog has his day\". But reality once and again tells us that chance favors the prepared mind. It is true that the prepared mind is more likely to seize an opportunity, which perhaps only knocks once. First, he/she is \"mentally\" prepared like a watchful leopard waiting for its prey. Once the opportunity shows up, he/she can swiftly grasp it. Otherwise, he/she who
hesitates is lost. Second, he/she is \"physically\" prepared like a veteran athlete who trains hard. Once the chance presents itself, he/she is able to seize it. Since chance is rare and fleeting, anyone who desires success should always be ready to seize the opportunity when it appears. For one thing, he/she should constantly sharpen his/her skills to be \"physically\" prepared; for another, he/she should have his/her eyes open for opportunity to stay \"mentally\" prepared.
74 Should We Tell White Lies?
We have been taught not to lie and to be honest since childhood. However, in our daily lives we still have to tell white lies from time to time.00From my viewpoint, white lies are indispensable in certain circumstances. The reasons are as follows. Firstly, white lies bring harmony to our lives sometimes.00When a friend gives us a gift and asks us if we are fond of it, it is better to say yes even if we do not feel very contented. Secondly, sometimes white lies help people achieve success. Forest Gump was born mentally deficient. However, his mother used white lies to encourage him. She told him that he was not different from other normal kids. That eventually made Forest a national hero. To sum up, white lies help us avoid embarrassment and raise others' confidence. Indeed honesty is an important virtue, but white lies, in some cases, should be tolerated.
75 On the Importance of Punctuality
As can be seen from the picture, a man named James is late for work again. This picture depicts something that haunts people of almost all age groups: unpunctuality. Of course, everyone is late sometimes 00due to unavoidable circumstances. But I think we'd better try our best to be punctual as the importance of punctuality is demonstrated in each and every aspect of work and life. To begin with, punctuality is one of the most valued qualities in today's business. To be late for an appointed meeting with one's customers may send out a clear signal that he is untrustworthy. In this way, one's career may be hindered by his bad sense of time. Secondly, being punctual is a sign of respect. If you want to win others' respect and make friends with others, you should learn to be punctual. For my part, to understand the importance of punctuality and raise the awareness is the root of being punctual. And since punctuality is such a precious quality, we should make every effort to cultivate the habit of punctuality.
76 My View on Piracy
Nowadays, piracy has become a serious problem in China. The copyright of many books, CDs, and other kinds of cultural products have been violated by pirated versions. This problem has aroused a great controversy all over the society. Some people are supportive of pirated copies for they hold that the original ones are usually too expensive to afford, while the pirated versions bring them the same enjoyment with much lower price. On the contrary, other people argue that piracy has severely violated the rights of producers and should be cracked down
according to the laws. For my part, no matter how much benefit piracy seems to bring to you, it is in its essence an illegal behavior, which causes heavy loss and disorder in the market. Therefore, effective efforts should be taken to fight against piracy.
77 To Save or Not to Save?
Since the th century, Chinese people's living standard has been greatly improved. Therefore, people have a lot of extra money to spend after covering their everyday expenses. Meanwhile, the traditional saving habit has been greatly challenged. To save or not to save has become a question. From my standpoint, we should still save. First of all, we should save for the emergencies. Incidents such as natural disasters and diseases come in a sudden. Without daily saving, it is impossible for us to overcome these life crises. Secondly, saving enables us to spend our money more properly. With enough money in hand, it will be much easier for us to plan some important things, such as going back to college for further study, or starting our own business. To sum up, we ought to abide by our traditional saving habit. Saving up assures us of a secure and better life.
78 On Offering Seats to the Aged
It has been a traditional Chinese virtue that young people offer their seats to the aged when taking buses or subways. He who refuses to do so will be despised. However, a new voice has arisen in recent years that young
working people don't have to surrender their seats and quite a few young people do feel hesitant about offering their seats to the aged, just like the man portrayed in the picture. People who argue against offering seats to the aged believe that the young working people, exhausted by their stressful work, need a seat more than the old people, who are more carefree. I have to admit that young people are the most stressful in the society, but offering seats to the aged is a moral matter. Besides, the aged are physically weaker, which is an undeniable fact. So morally or physically, I believe, the aged deserve a seat offered by the younger people.
79 Is Being Quiet An Unfavoured Personality?
Being quiet and reserved is a common personality of human beings. It comes by nature and usually is characterized by talking little, being shy with strangers and enjoying time alone. However, some people argue00that being quiet is an unfavoured personality today and a drawback of a person in modern society. They believe that nowadays people should speak out what they are thinking of, what achievements they have made and what they are capable of doing in order to seize opportunities and that people with a quiet personality normally would fail to communicate their ideas effectively with others and thus be less possible to succeed. In my opinion, being quiet is not necessarily an unfavoured personality. Quiet people can get opportunities that outgoing people may never get, for instance, positions in finance and accounting which often favour a quiet personality. I believe each personality will find its right place in society.
80 The Greatest Invention in Your Eyes
It is no exaggeration to say human society is propelledby various great inventions. Sometimes a great invention, such as the invention of a steam engine, marks the beginning of a new era. Among all, the invention of computer is the most significant one in my eyes. Two major reasons can be listed as bellow. Firstly, the invention of computerenables human beings to process much more information than they could at any time in history. Secondly, the way people work and live has been greatly changed for the better because of the invention. As for me, the use of computer has formed a necessary part of my daily life. I rely on it to store audio and video data, complete tasks which entails the use of computer software and get connected to the ever-changing world.
81 My View on Modesty in Modern Society
Modesty is one of Chinese traditional virtues and was once valued much by all Chinese people. By showing a moderate opinion on one's own abilities or talents, one would be seen as humble and polite in the past. However, this virtue has received much doubt in modern society. In the world where everything changes so fast, many people believe if one did not show his or her own talents actively, others would not bother to dig them out. So in school, students are encouraged to speak out their own opinions, and during job interviews, job hunters have to present what they are capable of doing. Even in advertisements, we can hear frequently \"We are the No. 1\".
In my mind's eye, though modesty may not be applied as widely in today's society, it is a quality one should cherish. With true modesty, one can realize his or her own strengths and weaknesses, and make greater achievements in future life.
82 On Having to Do Something You Don't Like
Will you sometimes compromise your interest or preferences and do something you do not like? For example, accepting a job you have no interest in or marrying a man/woman you do not like. Different people respond differently when they have to do things they do not like. Some people follow their inner voices and can never bear to do things they do not like. If they decide to do a job, they do it because that is where their interest lies instead of being influenced by other factors. In comparison, other people are more flexible. They do what is necessary under the current situation. They can accept a job which pays them well to support their families even though they do not like it. In my opinion, we should follow our hearts when it comes to critical decisions, such as jobs and marriage, but on trivial matters, it is harmless to be flexible.
83 Saying No or Not?
If someone makes a request, do you always agree to help or do you choose to say no? Different people may have different answers to this question. Some people believe that saying no is uncaring, even selfish and
they fear by refusing others' requests they might let people down, risk friendships and break social network. So they never say no to a request. On the contrary, some other people believe one should learn to say no because one does not need to meet the expectations of everyone. And learning to say no can help you earn respect from yourself as well as those around you. From my point of view, though saying no can be difficult, it is necessary to say no at times when you find yourself under too much stress meeting other people's need. After all, turning down a request does not mean turning down a person.
84 The Standard for A Good Job
Everyone wants to find a good job. But people's views on a good job differ greatly from each other. Some people think that the most important factor for a decent job is money. They argue that as money can be equivalent to anything, salary should be the first thing to consider while looking for a job. Others, however, insist that personal interest values more than anything else in this respect. They hold that happiness is the most important, and that an uninteresting job should never be counted as a good one. There are still other considerations for a good job which include stability, distance between workplace and home, and so on. In my opinion, each consideration above has a point from their own perspective. There is no standard or exact definition for a good job, for everyone has a right to decide what is important for himself. For me, the job that brings reasonable income and suits my interests is the best.
85 Go to Work or Become A Postgraduate?
Many college students face a dilemma when graduating. They do not know whether they should go for a job or further their study as a postgraduate. On the one hand, if they choose to work, they can enjoy economic independence immediately. But the starting salaries they receive can be very small, sometimes even lower than those of blue collar workers. On the other hand, if they get higher degrees, they will become more competitive than most graduates and their starting salaries can be higher. However, the job choices left to them may be fewer than those they had as graduates. In my opinion, the decision actually depends on each individual's practical situation. If one wants to pursue further academic achievements and makes sure that he can benefit a lot from a master degree, further study is a better choice. But if his family's economic conditions do not allow him to do so, or postgraduate study contributes very little to his competitiveness, he'd better prepare his resume as early as possible.
86 Working in Big Cities or Small Sized Cities?
With employment pressure increasing in big cities in recent years, college graduates' decisions about where to go after graduation have become a big problem. In some sense, to work in a big city or a small sized city, that is a tough question for many college graduates. On the one hand, the rising living cost and fierce competition are making it ever more difficult for college graduates to gain a firm foothold in big cities. However, big cities
do bring more opportunities and higher salaries. On the other hand, life in small sized cities is much easier than that in big cities. Moreover, companies in small cities offer broader career development, which means college graduates can achieve success in career much earlier. From my point of view, where to work after graduation largely depends on what matters most for each graduate. Since an easier life means more to me, working in a small sized city is not a bad idea for me.
87 On Self-employment
Now more and more college graduates no longer wait
to be employed by enterprises passively. Instead, many of them choose to employ themselves and be their own boss. Indeed, self-employment has its advantages. Firstly, college students starting their own businesses 00enjoy the support and guidance of the government, such as tax relief and business start-up loan. Secondly, self-employment gives the young entrepreneurs a sense of accomplishment and independence. They have the right to handle their enterprises' own affairs and make very important decisions by their own. But self-entrepreneurship also has so many challenges to meet. Lack of related experience, training, business environment, and enough start-up funds are the obstacles for the young ambitious entrepreneur. As I see it, self-employment is a nice choice for those with adequate conditions. It can also help to relieve the great employment pressure at present. But young people should never rush into
this field as it is full of unknown factors.
88 A Letter of Suggestion
Dear Sir/Madam,
As a student of this university and a regular visitor to library, I feel that it is my obligation to make a suggestion concerning the use of air conditioner in Reading Room A on the third floor of the library. In the first place, I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude for the comfortable environment you have provided for us. However, many students as well as I feel that it is too cold to study in Reading Room A. As I find out, the air conditioner in Reading Room A is set at ℃ from day to night. It would be more comfortable if you can set the air conditioner at ℃, which is also more environmental-friendly. I would really appreciate it if my suggestion could be considered and positive changes take place in this regard.
Yours sincerely, Li Ming
89 A Letter of Consolation
Dear Li Ming,
How are you doing? When I watched the news on TV about the terrible
earthquake in Sichuan Province, I was really concerned about you and your family. You are the only person I know in Sichuan. Is everything OK with your family? Please tell me about your conditions at this moment. I wish that you stayed very far from the affected place and none of your family members was injured. I'm so sorry to hear the disaster. It took away so many lives and damaged so many places. I know you must be much more grieved than I am. But please don't be too worried, everything will be fine. If you need any assistance, please let me know. I'm always prepared to fly to your place and help you.
Yours, Xiaogang
90 A Thank-you Letter
Dear Mary,
After a pleasant flight, I have arrived home safely this morning. This journey in Yunnan proves the most memorable one, which should be owed to your hospitality. It surprised me when I saw you at the airport of Kunming. In fact, you could have only needed to tell me your address, but you took half a day off just to pick me up. During the next three days, you continued to move me with all your hospitality. Every morning when I got up, I saw the breakfast you prepared for me before you left home to work. It's very kind of you, and I am really grateful. I do not know how to express my deep gratitude to you. I really look forward to your trip to Shanghai next
year, which will allow me a chance to entertain you as a good friend.
Yours sincerely, Li Ming
91 A Complaint Letter
Dear manager,
I am writing to lodge the complaint about the fake products I purchased last Sunday in the body care department of your shopping mall. On th, June, I bought some body lotion at your store. But later at home, when I opened and tried to use it, I found that it was a fake product. Then I went back to the shop and asked for a refund. However, Jane, the shop assistant, ignored my request and treated me very badly. That ruined almost all my previous good impression on your shopping mall. I feel very angry at such an action of violating customers' right and I am determined not to give up pursuing the justice. Here I request my refund and the apology from Jane as well. I would appreciate your assistance and inspection into this matter. I am looking forward to your early reply. Yours Sincerely, Li Mei
92 A Letter Declining A Job Offer
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you very much for offering me the position of General Manager
Assistant. I am really grateful that you think I'm equal to this job. However, I am so sorry to say that I have to decline this job. It's not because I don't like this job or feel discontented with the salary you offer. In fact, everything meets perfectly with my job expectation, except that the working place is too far away from my residence. It's a difficult decision to make, but I have accepted a similar position from another company, which will save me an hour's course on the way to work. I am really sorry if I cause you any inconvenience. But I resolutely believe that you can find a more suitable person for this position with all your attractive conditions. Respectfully
yours, Li Ming
93 A Letter to Apply for A New Student ID Card
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am a second year student with a major in maths and I am writing to apply for a new student ID card. I lost the old one when I was studying in the library yesterday evening. I left my wallet on the library desk when I went to the restroom and it was stolen by a thief. It is very inconvenient without the ID card to live on campus as the card is required at the entry of many college facilities. I indeed wish that I could have a new card before my old one is found, if possible. I am sorry for any inconvenience that might cause you. I do appreciate your help and look forward to your early reply.
Yours sincerely, Li Ming
94 A Farewell Letter to A Retiring Teacher
Dear Professor Yang,
The news that you are retiring next month fills us all with attachment. In our heart, you are much more than our teacher of Intensive Reading. In fact, you have also become our close friend. In the past two years, we have benefited greatly from your instructive and inspiring teaching. But you never confined your care for us within the classroom. When we felt confused and needed guidance, you were always there and ready to offer your help. When we won some honor or prize, you were so happy as if you were the one who was rewarded. You leave us so many precious memories. However, we also feel consoled that you are retiring from so hard a position that has consumed your health. We hope you can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable retirement life. Please accept our most sincere wishes and thanks. Truly
yours, Li Ming

96 A Letter of Apology
Dear Ms. Wang,
I am writing to apologize for the fact that I failed to hand in the homework of your writing class on time yesterday.
The day before yesterday, the photography association held a field trip to Suzhou to take pictures for the coming photography competition. As the president of the association, I had to be in charge of the whole activity as well as take care of our members. It was 1 o'clock a.m. when I got home. Having a very tight schedule the whole day, I felt so tired that I fell asleep once I arrived home, failing to finish the homework.
I know I should balance work and study well. I would never let this happen again and I will hand in my homework as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Li Ming

98 A Letter to A Friend
Dear Li Ming,
How are you doing? I heard you have been confronted with a lot of difficulties in your computer study lately and you are thinking about giving up the Computer Rank Examination next month.
I hope you can give it a second thought. This exam is very important for us because the certificate is highly valued by most of the employers in job recruitment. Besides, later in our jobs, it is inevitable to use some basic computer skills. It is normal to have barriers in the road of learning. But they are not impossible to overcome as long as you keep trying.
There is still one month left. Don't give up! I believe you have the ability and courage to catch up and pass the exam at last. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to tell me. I'm always there supporting you.
Yours,
Xiaogang
