Postcards From The World

While the sun washed over the grass of my grandmother’s front garden, I sunk into the familiarity of one of her armchairs. Life, as

I

knew

it, had

changed. My

beloved

grandmother, my nanny, a standin parent in the absence of my father, had cancer. It was terminal, and could never be cured.

As she watched Getaway on television, she remarked to me that she’d never left Australia and that now she never would. I swallowed the sadness that came with knowing that chapters of her life were to be left unwritten.

At work, feeling helpless, I wiped tables and took orders and thought. HARD! The Saturday afternoon lunch rush was not enough to lull me from my thoughts. Wracked with grief, I pondered the power of Facebook and the collective strength of human empathy. I raced from the end of my shift to ask strangers on the internet for help.

“My Nanny Del has cancer. It’s terminal and she will never see the world. Please send her postcards so she can see the world from her armchair: I can offer nothing but gratitude.〞

I resolved not to breathe a word of this; should nothing e, I couldn’t bear to carry her disappointment along with my own. Should something wander into our humble little letterbox, I would consider it a blessing and embrace it like I embraced her little, shrinking frame.

Days turned to weeks and Nanny’s health worsened rapidly in the early months of 2018. Life took me through my fulltime study, babysitting

and

waiting

tables, along

with

the

responsibility of caring for a grandparent who was too sick to care for herself. As I helped Nanny in the early hours of those mornings, she would chat to me, sometimes joys, other times, sorrows. Whatever she shared became precious.

One afternoon, finally, a postcard from the United State arrived in our letterbox. It was about a grand celebration of the Easter, where people were making and sending colorful eggs and bunnies. It was obvious that the American friend just wanted to offer my grandmother a good wish, encouraging her to fight against the cancer bravely. Without any hesitation, I ran to my

grandmother excitedly, postcard in hand tightly. Though a bit weak, my grandmother gathered her strength and asked me to read it to her. Those words and the picture brightened her inner world of enjoying the world. From that day on, postcards from different corners of the globe streamed in our humble letterbox. (102 words)

In the months that followed, her living room became a departure hall and our flights departed daily. I cherished every minute, sharing customs and practices from different countries with my beloved grandmother. Every day I would sit her bedside, showing her the wonderful pictures and telling her about the marvelous stories behind the colorful postcards. Day in and day out, we enjoyed the splendid history and culture of China, journeyed through the beautiful scenery of northern Europe, experienced the hardship when passing through the Sahara Desert. Every destination brought my grandmother endless joy and inspired her to face the disease with great hope. Those precious moments couldn’t keep my grandmother stay with me longer. However, it was people’s kindness that warmed our last dark days. (108 words)

“SAI BABA! Sai Baba! Sai Baba! Hahahaha!〞

“Today is Shimla’s big day! We have a celebrity visiting our city! Hahahaha!〞 Rani’s cheeks burned with embarrassment and tears stung her eyes as she elbowed her way to the exit through the crowd of teasing boys in the packed school bus. It wasn’t the first time she’d been called Sai Baba, after the famous Hindu holy man 〔印度圣人〕she’d seen on TV with his trademark afro〔爆炸式卷发〕towering over his head.

But this time had to be the worst. Rani jumped off the school bus, angry thoughts hovering inside Rani’s head as she marched home in the drizzling rain. Why did her hair have to curl like a giant cotton candy balloon just when she wanted it to behave? Why, why, why, fumed Rani as she turned the back door key.

“Rani, is that you?〞 Mama called from the family room. Suddenly Rani’s cousins, Amit and Sumit, came charging toward her. “How many eggs does Rani have in that nest on her head?〞 screamed Amit. “Let me get that wig〔假发〕off Rani’s head!〞 shouted Sumit. Before she could think, Rani had fled out the door and went

back up the road she’d walked down minutes before. Halfway up, she slid unseen behind a green curtain of bamboo. Tearing through the wild growth, she made her way down a narrow mud path into a clearing〔空地〕. She threw her schoolbag on the ground and breathed hard.

“I hate my hair!〞 she cried. Collapsing on her schoolbag, she bitterly remembered the time she’d spent trying to smooth her hair in vain. Before long, she fell into a fitful sleep.

“RANI! RAAAANI!〞

Rani woke up to Mama’s calls. She sounded anxious. “I’ll never go home,〞 she promised herself darkly. Mama let Amit and Sumit make fun of me. Papa would never have done that. He would listen to me and stand by my side. The minutes wore on. Alone in her secret hideout, Rani watched the shadow of Mamna get longer and begin to disappear as dusk fell.

Suddenly, leaves rustling, someone or something was making its way into the clearing. So frightened was she that her heart beat fast. Fear as well as a bit regret, she kept still, not knowing what would happen next. Indeed, what she experienced in the very day contributed to her determination that she would never go home. However, as the sound of the steps approached, there came a familiar figure. It was Papa, holding an umbrella with anxious expressions. Rani couldn’t wait to rush out of her secret hideout before Papa knew it. She dashed over and hugged him tightly, bursting out crying with great sadness. It seemed to be decades before Rani calmed down. (101 words)

The next moment Papa was sitting beside her. What surprised her most was that no blame came from Papa. Instead, Papa’s warm words melt her “frozen〞 heart. “I am here for you, Rani!〞 Papa said as if nothing had happened. “From Mama, I know what occurred to you. I really understand your unique hair, which apparently has brought you so much trouble. But let it go! You’re always a gifted girl in our hearts! It is your good performance and talent that show what

you are! Cheer up, my girl! ...〞 On that gloomy day, nothing was better than such words full of love and understanding that gave her courage to face life with confidence. (108 words)
