Dream in Heart

On the first day of school our professor introduced a new classmate—an old lady—to us. Her name was Rose, and she was eighty-seven years old.

After class Rose and I walked to the Student Union Building and shared a chocolate milk-shake. She told me she always dreamed of having a college education and now she was getting one. We became friends at once. Every day for the next months, we would leave class together and talk. I was always attracted, listening to this \"time machine” as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Rose became famous and easily made friends wherever she went. She was always highly motivated, responsible, and deeply involved in class activities. In spare time she had someone to hang out or go to bars with. She even took part in sports activities. She said that after-class activities can be an important part of her experience, creating chances for friendship and learning. At the end of the term we invited Rose to speak at our football meal. A little embarrassed, she walked to the microphone and simply said, “I’ m sorry I’ m so nervous.” As we laughed, she cleared her throat and began, “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. If you’ re nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year, you will turn twenty. If I’ m eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year, I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. We have no choice and that doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the chance in change. In this way the elderly don’ t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.” Rose ended her speech by courageously singing “The Rose”. She challenged us to study the words of the song and lived them out in daily lives.

At the year’ s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago. One week after graduation, Rose died peacefully in her sleep. Over two thousand college students attended her funeral(葬礼)in honor of the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’ s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

28.Why does the author compare Rose to “time machine” in Paragraph 2? A. To stress her old age and knowledge of life.

B. To describe the close friendship between them. C. To show that she always enjoyed her active life. D. To explain why she took on a challenge in college.

29.Rose was invited to speak at the football meal most probably because ______. A. she was a great football fan B. she was the smartest student

C. she tried hard to achieve her dream

D. she became more educated than the others

30.We can learn that Rose agreed with the idea that ______. A. growing older means growing up B. it takes talent and ability to grow up

C. receiving high education helps to be courageous D. one grows older at the same time when he grows up 31.The purpose of the passage is to ______. A. provide an example for the elderly B. discuss how to grow up quickly

C. tell the importance of attending college D. encourage readers to live life to the full

D

Thousands of years ago, people didn’t know that the Earth moved. They thought the sun really did move across the sky. The Greek god Helios was said to drive the sun around the sky with his chariot (战车). But now, these ideas have all changed. Nowadays, it is the sun that drives our “chariot” around the sky. So, what does all this mean? Well, quite simply, there is now a plane (or “chariot”) that is powered by the sun. It has special parts in its wings. These parts take in power from the sun. They take so much power in that they can carry on flying at night. In the Greek myths (希腊神话), Helios had to take a break at night. It seems we’re finally even more efficient than the gods themselves.

This plane is called Solar Impulse (“太阳驱动”号). It will fly across the US in May. This is very important for the future of the world.

So why is solar energy so good for us? Well, other kinds of energy cause a few problems. If you live in China, you’ve probably noticed the pollution. This is caused by burning coal or gas to make energy. The heat and chemicals (化学制品) from this make things work. But if we use the heat from the sun, we don’t have to burn anything, and there’s no pollution.

Solar energy is not all there yet. It needs to be improved. But the best thing about it is that, unlike coal and gas, it doesn’t run out. Solar Impulse could keep flying forever. Well, actually, the sun will run out too, one day, but not for another 5 billion years. That’s a pretty long flight. 32.What does “chariot” really refer to in the last sentence of Paragraph 1?

A. the Earth. B. the Greek god. C. Solar Impulse. D. birds. 33.In the passage, what is mentioned as the reason of pollution in China?

A. Overpopulation. B. Burning coal or gas. C. Using solar energy. D. Heavy traffic.

34.What does the writer mean by “That’s a pretty long flight”? A. It takes a lot of time to get Solar Impulse going.

B. Solar Impulse moves very slowly.

C. Solar Impulse will be in use for a long time.

D. Solar Impulse has a long way to go to take the place of the sun. 35.The passage is most probably taken from___________.

A. a Greek myth B. a science fiction(科幻小说) C. a story-book D. a science magazine

A survey into My Hometown

Recently, my classmates and I conducted a survey into our hometown. Here are some findings and thoughts we would like to share with our readers.

My hometown, Deyang, is in the Northeast of Sichuan province, approximately 40 kilometers from Chengdu. With a population of near 4 million, Deyang is one of the most important industrial cities in Southwest China. In the past few years, Deyang has witnessed many significant developments, one of which is urban expansion. The city has been growing at a speed nobody can believe, with more high buildings and newly-built roads connecting Deyang to the rest of country. I personally am thrilled with these changes and fully confident that our city will become better and better.

One direction I hope my hometown is heading is that we will continue to find a way to change our environment for the better. I believe people need more blues skies and clean rivers as well as industrial developments.
